Taking Museum to school/community

Rational-
The idea of ‘taking museum to the school/community’ was formulated after having attended three
months training on ‘museum and community development program’ in Japan in year 2019.
Moreover, a short analysis carried out by the museum management on the number of visitors
visiting in the museum from the year 2016- 2020.
Objective
1. To sensitize the role of museum in preserving and promoting cultural heritage
2. To pilot few primary schools located in the remote community
Places of visit and the program
The museum management decided to visit primary schools in Trongsa Dzongkhag that were
unable to bring their students to the museum due to a lack of transportation and other reasons.
The main goal of this program was to inform students about the museum and why it is important
to visit museum galleries. We tried to explain definition of museum by various scholars. For
instance we shared ICOM, 2007 as Museum as a non-profit, permanent institution in the service
of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches,
communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment
for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment.
The program included watching 15 minutes of museum documentary and a brief power point
presentation about museum galleries. I was assisted by Dechen Cheki, conservator assist. and
Leki Samphel, museum assist. to explain in simple Dzongkha and English.
